Electric vehicles have a long history of application in transporting products or materials in factories or production sites. Around 1910, electric vehicles were used for cargo transportation, and in 1922, electric lifting forklifts appeared. Subsequently, electric vehicles, primarily electric forklifts, were widely used in factories for lifting, moving, and stacking goods.

Currently, there are many types of forklifts. Structurally, forklifts mainly include three-point and four-point counterbalance forklifts, reach trucks, stacker cranes, three-way stackers, and pallet trucks. However, regardless of the type, forklifts are basically composed of four main parts: the power unit, the chassis, the working parts, and the electrical equipment. An electric forklift is shown in Figure 1-3.
At present, the application of advanced batteries such as lithium-ion batteries is not widespread. Electric forklifts offer advantages such as smooth operation, easy maintenance, simple operation, and low operating costs. They are particularly effective in enclosed environments, producing no noise and exhaust fumes, ensuring a comfortable working environment. The main disadvantages of electric forklifts are the need for charging equipment, resulting in high initial investment, long charging time (generally 7-8 hours, fast charging 2-3 hours), and short continuous working time after a single charge. Due to limitations in battery capacity and power density, the drive motor power of electric forklifts is generally lower than that of internal combustion engines, leading to lower speeds and poorer climbing ability. Therefore, electric forklifts are mainly used in warehouses and workshops with narrow aisles, short transport distances, good road surfaces, small lifting capacities, and low speed requirements. In some special conditions, electric forklifts are the best choice for cargo transportation, such as in flammable goods warehouses or industries with high environmental requirements such as food, pharmaceuticals, microelectronics, and instrumentation. They are also primarily used in cold storage warehouses where internal combustion engines are difficult to start.
Other in-plant vehicles powered by batteries include: electric trailers (used for traction of unpowered cargo boxes or carriages), mobile lifting platforms, etc.
